This Sunday, Germany’s citizens will head to the polls and decide whether Angela Merkel will remain chancellor for another parliamentary term – a vote with great importance for Europe. The federal election marks the highlight of Germany’s “Super Election Year” 2017 which included four state elections.
 
After Angela Merkel's main contender Martin Schulz, leader of the Social Democrats (SPD), had shaken up the German election race earlier this year, the campaign has since been rather unagitated and lacking in big issues and controversies.

With 36 % in the current predictions and more than 14 % head start from the SPD, Angela Merkel’s conservative bloc of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) is likely to remain the strongest political force in Germany. Meanwhile, the race for third strongest party is tight. All four contenders run somewhere between 8 and 11 %: The Left, the Green Party, the liberal FDP and the right-wing populist AfD, which is very likely to enter the German Bundestag for the first time.
 
Regardless of the outcome of the election, the German Bundestag will face an extensive change of guards as about a third of the current members are not running for reelection.
